CURATOR STATEMENT

I met Kate and Bruno in San Francisco when they danced at my venue, The Garage, in 2014. I found their relaxed warmth off-putting in the beginning but eventually I realized it was authentic and i should probably accept it at face value. after that, for years, they would invite me to visit Missoula and eventually i said yes in 2025 because i was afraid they would stop inviting me.

In 2025 i choreographed and performed in EXPERIENCE 4.0 which was a life-changing experience and I pitched a return trip in 2026 for Parallel Obscura. i knew i wanted to work with Bruno's extensive composers library and poetry, as well as Paul's live music and film-making.

the title Parallel Obscura plays with the idea of parallel lines and linear thought, where as Obscura is a juxtaposition that evokes collective consciousness and abstraction, sort of a right brain vs. left brain exploration

Pigeon

Film : Kasperthesaint

Music : Bruno Augusto

Performance : Kasperthesaint and Ruby Jenni

Pigeon gives a modern perspective on identity by approaching an ethical intersection between Self and Other. It's inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet, specifically the phrase "To be, or not to be? That is the question." The Pigeon represents the idea of a messenger pigeon. Are we the messenger, or the message?

A Prayer for Ripley (Alien 1-3)

with Kate and Maeve, was inspired by Siguorney Weaver's battles with the mother Alien in the film franchise but is really a metaphor for fighting what you believe in. What values and ideas are you willing to fight for? and how far will you go to stand up for them?

Concept & Direction : Joe Landini

Performance : Kate Jordan Augusto and Maeve Fahey

You Taught Me How To Do What Became Who I Am

Text : Gillian Kessler and Ruby Jenni

Gillian was my English teacher through elementary and middle school. She taught me to write poetry, having a hand in shaping the way I see the world with beauty and curiosity. The text featured in this performance was a poem I wrote as an assignment for her class, in 7th grade, as well as her own version of the poem. It is inspired by "Ego Tripping" by poet Nikki Giovanni. - Ruby Jenni
